J Street and J Street U Statement on the Upcoming Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Conference at UPenn

The announcement that a conference of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) will be held in February on the campus of UPENN has been met with a great deal of concern by organizations and members of the Jewish community. We share the strong opposition expressed by many of our colleagues in the organized Jewish community to the BDS movement and are similarly concerned about the implications of the upcoming conference at UPENN. J Street On The UN

With the pending approach of the Palestinians to the United Nations for membership this September, J Street has just issued a policy paper which urges the continuation of serious diplomatic efforts by the United States and the international community to avert a showdown, calls on the Palestinians to defer their application, and supports the United States’ declared intention to veto the application at the Security Council. J Street also issued an open letter calling on the American Jewish community to shift the energy it is putting into defeating the Palestinian initiative at the UN into promoting the urgency of a two-state resolution to the conflict. In an email to the J Street community today, J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami reaffirmed the movement’s deep commitment to a Palestinian state – because it is so vital to Israel’s security, democratic character and Jewish nature to achieve a two-state solution. Caring enough to engage

We live at a time when serious decisions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are under discussion, the resolution of which will have implications not just for the future of Israel but for Jews living all over the world. It's not surprising that these discussions are accompanied by deep tensions, as they raise questions of life and death, and about the success or failure of the State of Israel and the heart and the soul of the Jewish people.
