Senator Feinstein (D-CA) authors letter praising President's vision for Middle East peace

February 25th, 2009

On his second day in office, President Obama appointed George Mitchell, the broker of Northern Ireland peace, to serve as his Special Envoy for Middle East Peace. Then, 66 Members of the House of Representatives signed onto a resolution endorsing Mitchell and the President's vision for Middle East Peace - more than have endorsed any other pro-Israel, pro-peace Resolution in years. Now, it's the Senate's turn. Then, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) circulated a letter to her colleagues endorsing the trip and President Obama’s vision of a new era of engagement and peacemaking. With J Street and other allies in the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement encouraging members of the Senate to sign the letter, Senator Feinstein sent the letter this week with a total of 33 signatures, including her own. Rep. Delahunt (D-MA) introduces resolution supporting Middle East Envoy George Mitchell

February 4th, 2009

Rep. Delahunt (D-MA) On February 4th, Congressman Delahunt introduced House Resolution 130 with 31 original co-sponsors from both parties praising the appointment of Senator George Mitchell as Special Envoy for Middle East Peace.  The resolution currently has 65 co-sponsors. "There's a fresh breeze blowing in Washington when it comes to American policy toward Israel and the Middle East," said Jeremy Ben-Ami, executive director of J Street, of the resolution introduced by Rep. William Delahunt (D-Ma). "This resolution and last week's letter to Secretary of State Clinton calling for humanitarian aid for Gaza demonstrate how broadly Congress supports the new administration's effort to engage constructively in resolving the difficult conflicts facing the Middle East and earning the trust once again of all the parties to those conflicts." J Street members - along with Brit Tzedek v'Shalom members - are calling their Representatives to encourage them to cosponsor House Resolution 130 here. You can view J Street's press release on the resolution's introduction here. Read More...
