J Street Applauds Deal to Release Gilad Shalit

Washington — J Street is deeply hopeful about early reports that a deal has been reached to release Israeli Staff Sergeant Gilad Shalit. Along with Jews around the world, J Street is overjoyed by the prospect that Staff Sergeant Shalit may soon know freedom again. J Street's leaders have been among the many who have met with the Shalit family over the years and advocated that US policymakers and political leaders provide all possible assistance in obtaining his release. Days of Reflection

For many of us, these are days for deep reflection and soul-searching on the past year. How, we ask, as individuals and as a community can we better ourselves and the world? Naturally, our focus turns in part to Israel and how events there impact us as a people. My heart, along with many of yours no doubt, swelled with pride on hearing that among the Nobel Prize winners this year is an Israeli physicist, Daniel Shechtman – another amazing accomplishment for a small country that has done so much to advance global learning. Word on the Street: Time to Lead

Now is not the time for us to step back in despair. It is time for us to step forward to help lead in the American Jewish community. We can and must shift the communal discussion away from an unproductive blame game to a recognition of the urgency of a two-state solution if Israel is to remain both Jewish and democratic. It is time for us to lead in American politics. We have to stop politicians from taking positions that are, in the long-run, counterproductive for Israel and the U.S. while searching for short-term political gain. And it is time for us to lead in the global Jewish community. We must tell our brothers and sisters in Israel the truth: the path that our national homeland is on is unsustainable. Read More...
