J STREET COMMENDS BIPARTISAN SENATE MAJORITY FOR PASSING WAR POWERS RESOLUTION TO BLOCK WAR OF CHOICE WITH IRAN

February 13, 2020

J Street commends the Senate for passing a bipartisan war powers resolution preventing President Trump from launching a catastrophic, unauthorized war of choice with Iran. J Street’s Vice President of Government Affairs Dylan Williams released the following statement:

“The Senate has acted to restrain a reckless president whose actions have set in motion a dangerous cycle of escalation with Iran — bringing us to the brink of another disastrous war in the Middle East. By passing this war powers resolution, Congress has reasserted its constitutional authority to decide whether, when and where our nation goes to war. Even if the president vetoes this resolution, he can no longer deny that clear, bipartisan majorities in both houses oppose a war with Iran.

“President Trump’s decision to unilaterally renege on the nuclear agreement and pursue a misguided ‘maximum pressure’ campaign has only accelerated Iran’s nuclear program, strengthened regime hardliners and brought us closer to a catastrophic regional conflict. It’s now clearer than ever that President Trump’s Iran policy has completely failed to either constrain Iran or to make America safer.

“An overwhelming majority of Americans and an overwhelming majority in the American Jewish community reject the Trump administration’s march to war and support a diplomatic resolution to the crisis.”
