My Speech to the Presbyterians

Last Shabbat, I addressed Presbyterian clergy and laity at the Presbyterian Church (USA) General Assembly in Detroit, arguing against BDS at an event sponsored by Presbyterians for Middle East Peace. I urged Presbyterian commissioners to vote against proposed resolutions that support divesting church funds from companies doing business in the occupied territory and another calling for the Church to reconsider its support of a two-state solution. Last December, in the wake of the First Step Agreement between the US, its allies and Iran on that country’s nuclear program, some of the more hawkish American forces on foreign policy decided to pursue legislation to impose further sanctions on Iran. The new bill, in short, was designed to kill the talks. The resolution commends the Obama Administration's commitment to Israel's survival and security, as well as the administration's moves to initiate a new diplomatic effort to achieve a two-state solution. Twenty-Seven Senators Call for “Sustained, US Diplomatic Initiative” for Two-State Solution

On the eve of President Obama’s trip to Israel, 27 Senators have signed on to a letter authored by California Senator Dianne Feinstein calling for a sustained US diplomatic initiative to help forge a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians based on a two-state solution.
