Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) Statement Regarding Violence in Gaza
Fairfax, VA — Congressman-Elect Gerry Connolly made the following statement today concerning the ongoing security situation in Israel: “The current tragic circumstances in the Gaza strip were triggered by Hamas’ decision not to renew the cease fire with Israel and to resume mortar shelling of Israel proper. Israel has been forced to respond with air strikes to protect and defend innocent civilians exposed to such wanton violence. This relentless cycle of terror and retaliation will not cease until there is clear recognition of the right of Israel to exist within secure borders, at peace with its neighbors. That will require the re-engagement of intense U.S. diplomacy in the region and the willingness of all parties to return to the negotiating table.” (Press Release, January 3, 2009)
Constituent Letter
Dear Friend,
Thank you for contacting me about the situation in the Middle East. I appreciate your interest in this issue and your views are important to me.
The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is contentious and long-standing. I believe it is crucial that we begin working toward achieving peace in the region. The United States must be seen as an honest, independent broker able to bring both sides to the table. We must keep in mind that a negotiated peace is in the interest of all parties – Israel, Palestine, and their neighbors.
The recent conflict in Gaza has created a humanitarian crisis that cannot go on and highlights the need for the United States to re- engage in the peace process. From my position on the Foreign Affairs Committee, I will be urging President Obama to do just that.
Once again, thank you for expressing your concern on this very important issue. I enjoyed hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Gerald Connolly
Member of Congress
