We can’t just sit this one out

“Maybe we should just sit this round out.”

That’s what a long-time supporter of two states said to me the other day questioning whether, with all the upheaval in the Middle East, now is really the time for Israel to pursue a two-state solution with the Palestinians.

Underlying the question is the assumption that if the risks of pursuing two states seem too great, maybe it’s better to just accept the status quo.

With the pending approach of the Palestinians to the United Nations for membership this September, J Street has just issued a policy paper which urges the continuation of serious diplomatic efforts by the United States and the international community to avert a showdown, calls on the Palestinians to defer their application, and supports the United States’ declared intention to veto the application at the Security Council. J Street also issued an open letter calling on the American Jewish community to shift the energy it is putting into defeating the Palestinian initiative at the UN into promoting the urgency of a two-state resolution to the conflict. In an email to the J Street community today, J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami reaffirmed the movement’s deep commitment to a Palestinian state – because it is so vital to Israel’s security, democratic character and Jewish nature to achieve a two-state solution.
