New York

NY-01

The district: New York’s 1st Congressional District (NY-01) includes eastern Long Island and has been represented by Rep. Lee Zeldin—one of only two Jewish Republicans in Congress—since he was first elected in 2014. In the district’s five-way primary in June, Perry Gershon secured the nomination with 36% of the vote.

Our candidate: Perry Gershon has spent his career in commercial real estate finance. During the Great Recession, he co-founded a firm to offer alternatives to traditional lending sources that had dried up, providing much-needed capital for finance-starved real estate projects and preventing defaults and foreclosures.

NY-25

The district: New York’s 25th congressional district is based in Rochester and is currently vacant following the unfortunate passing in March 2018 of longtime Congresswoman and JStreetPAC endorsee Louise Slaughter. According to the Cook Political Report, the district is categorized as “likely Democratic.” In 2016, Secretary Clinton carried the district by a 16-point margin, and Louise Slaughter won reelection with 56.2% of the vote. However, in other recent cycles, Slaughter had closer re-elects and narrowly won her 2014 contest by 0.4%.

Our Candidate: Joe Morelle is the Democratic nominee in New York’s 25th congressional district, after clearing a four-way primary with 46% of the vote. In November, he will face Republican nominee James Maxwell. Morelle has represented Rochester in the New York State Assembly since 1991, and in 2013, Morelle was appointed as the Majority Leader of the Assembly. During his time in the Assembly, he has authored over 200 laws.
