In a time of political turmoil and threats to our values in Israel and the U.S., J Street gives voice to the American Jewish majority and fights for pro-Israel, diplomacy-first policies in Washington and in communities across the country.  From opposing demolitions of Palestinian villages, to supporting and educating Congressional candidates in tight races around the country, J Street is making a major impact in the fight for political change in 2018 and beyond.

On December 2nd, please join J Street, Professor Mnookin and J Street U student leaders to celebrate the importance of young leadership in shaping the future of Israel and the American Jewish community.

The Jewish American Paradox:
Embracing Choice in a Changing World

by Robert Mnookin

The situation of American Jews today is deeply paradoxical. Jews have achieved unprecedented integration, influence and esteem in virtually every facet of American life. But the community now also faces critical and sometimes divisive challenges relating to intermarriage, religious observance and deeply conflicting views over Israeli politics.

Can American Jews collectively sustain a strong sense of Jewish identity in the light of these challenges? Who should count as Jewish in contemporary America?

How well do the answers of the past serve American Jews today? In this personal and deeply-reasoned book, Robert Mnookin delves into Jewish history, law and custom to explore how American Jews can collectively sustain a strong sense of Jewish identity in light of these challenges.

Robert H. Mnookin is the Samuel Williston Professor of Law at Harvard Law School, the Director of the Harvard Negotiation Research Project and for twenty-five years served as Chair of Harvard’s Program on Negotiation. A leading scholar in the field of conflict resolution, Professor Mnookin has applied his interdisciplinary approach to negotiation and conflict resolution to a remarkable range of problems and has served as a consultant to governments, international agencies, major corporations and law firms. His work has included facilitation of various dialog processes among Israelis and Palestinians.

J Street U Student Leaders

With J Street U chapters on over 70 campuses across the country, and over 1,200 students participating in J Street’s annual conference, J Street U student leaders have an enormous impact on the contentious Israel conversation on campus. In coalition with other progressive campus organizations and local synagogues, J Street U’s current national campaign, Stop Demolitions Build Peace, works to prevent the demolitions of Palestinian villages throughout the West Bank; to protect Palestinian rights – and the Two State Solution.

J Street U student leaders, as well as young professionals active in J Street, will share their experiences grappling with their Jewish identity and relationship to Israel in the polarized environment they face today. They will also share lessons for all of us regarding how we can support the next generation to authentically engage with Israel and explore their Jewish identity as young adults with integrity.
