Dancing in Jaffa (2013) – Discussion July 15 at 7pm
Can the pairing of young Israeli and Palestinian children as dance partners create opportunities for a more peaceful future? Renowned ballroom dancer Pierre Dulaine takes his New York program, Dancing Classrooms back to his city of birth, Jaffa. Starting with a seemingly impossible situation, marked by deep cultural restrictions and war-forged trauma, the program bridges gaps between the Jewish and Palestinian children. The film explores the complex stories of three children, all of whom are forced to confront issues of identity, segregation, and racial prejudice as they dance with their enemy.
