J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami released the following statement regarding the planned Quran burning in Gainesville, Florida on September 11th:
J Street condemns plans by the Dove World Outreach Center to burn Qurans on the anniversary of the September 11th attacks. Acts of hate like these desecrate the values of tolerance and religious freedom on which this country was founded and provide fodder for extremism around the world. This anti-Muslim act is the latest in a deeply disturbing series of events in recent weeks, some which have involved physical violence. As the Jewish community gathers to celebrate Rosh Hashanah and connect with our community’s values and history, our support of religious freedom for all takes on a deeper meaning and purpose. We urge Americans of all backgrounds to stand up to bigotry and hatred, and to protect the values of tolerance and justice that bind this country and our communities together.
