December 2, 2010

J Street mourns the loss of the 40 Israelis who died in today’s tragic fire in the Carmel Forest near Haifa, the deadliest fire in Israel’s history.

“J Street joins our brothers and sisters in Israel in mourning the 40 Israelis who passed away in today’s horrific fire,” said J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims’ families and all those affected by this tragedy. We applaud Israel’s neighbors who have stepped up to support the Israeli firefighters, and urge continued international cooperation to contain the fire and prevent further loss and destruction.”

UPDATE: J Street is announcing a $10,000 matching fund to help rebuild the communities affected by the disaster. We are partnering with the New Israel Fund’s Carmel Forest Fire Response Fund to send as much assistance as possible to rebuild the homes, communities, and Israel’s gorgeous North.
