J Street welcomes the news that the Republican Party platform committee has rejected a series of amendments that would have struck support for a two-state resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from the GOP platform.
That such amendments could garner even a modicum of support demonstrates the very real threat to longstanding bipartisan support for the two-state resolution as a central feature of America’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s survival and security as the democratic homeland of the Jewish people. At the same time, the rejection of these irresponsible proposals is evidence of the deepening wedge between the Republican majority—including in this instance the Romney campaign– upholding the best traditions of the party’s distinguished statespeople, and the Sheldon Adelson-backed one-state caucus whose policies would endanger both the United States and Israel.
We look forward to seeing the current language in support of the two-state resolution officially adopted at next week’s convention.
