J Street Supports Resolutions Urging EU to Designate Entirety of Hezbollah as Terrorist Organization

June 24, 2016

J Street supports two Congressional resolutions – S. Res. 482 in the Senate and H.Res.750 in the House of Representatives – which urge the European Union to designate Hezbollah in its entirety as a terrorist organization.

The European Union is an integral and valued partner in the international community’s efforts against terrorism. Like bipartisan majorities in both chambers of Congress, J Street has long urged the European Union to designate Hezbollah as a terrorist organization.

We appreciate that in 2013, the European Union designated Hezbollah’s “military wing” as a terrorist organization. This designation has helped the United States and European Union work more effectively together to thwart Hezbollah's activities.

Such cooperation to prevent and counter Hezbollah’s atrocious acts of terror and violence, including against the State and people of Israel, would be enhanced by the EU’s designation of the entirety of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization. As Hezbollah’s own Deputy Secretary General Naim Qassem made clear, Hezbollah does not “have a military wing and a political one… Every element of Hezbollah, from commanders to members as well as our various capabilities, are in the service of the resistance.”

We therefore support S. Res. 482 and H.Res.750 and urge lawmakers to work toward their expeditious passage.
