Carmel Fire: Rebuilding Begins Now

December 6, 2010

Israeli officials recently announced that the ferocious fire in Israel’s North, which claimed 42 lives, hundreds of homes, and 10,000 acres of forest had finally been brought under control.

J Street mourns this tragic loss of life, and our thoughts and prayers remain with the victims’ families and all those affected by this disaster in the Carmel Forest.

We’ve been shocked and saddened by this tragedy — and we are relieved to hear of a respite and heartened by the outpouring of international support that aided Israel in combating the blaze.

But the real work of rebuilding tattered homes, communities, and Israel’s gorgeous northern areas begins now.

With a $10,000 gift from J Street and matching donations from the J Street community, we directed more than $40,000 to the New Israel Fund’s Carmel Forest Fire Response Fund.
