Washington, DC – J Street welcomes a congressional letter signed by 178 representatives that strongly opposes Israeli annexation of territory in the West Bank. The letter, led by Representatives Brad Schneider and Jamie Raskin, was signed by the entire current and former House Democratic leadership.
J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami said:
“We welcome the letter signed by well over three-quarters of House Democrats opposing the Netanyahu government’s threat of West Bank annexation. It is deeply meaningful that such an overwhelming majority of the caucus is united against this dangerous path that undermines Israel’s security and democracy.
At a time when divisions with the Democratic Party over Israel often make headlines, this broad consensus shows the Party’s unity on core principles: rejecting annexation and supporting a resolution that guarantees peace, security and self-determination for both Israelis and Palestinians. For pro-Israel, pro-peace American Jews, this unity is especially important, affirming that our vision of a secure, Jewish and democratic Israel alongside a Palestinian state remains strongly represented in Congress.
Annexation would jeopardize the long-term US-Israel relationship, severely harm Israel’s global standing, undermine its regional integration and push peace further out of reach. The United States must use its influence to prevent this tragic and strategic mistake.
We extend our deepest thanks to Representatives Schneider and Raskin for spearheading this effort and for their principled leadership.”
