J Street on new Israeli construction in East Jerusalem

December 28, 2009

J Street opposes the Israeli Government’s recently announced new construction in East Jerusalem and urges Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to direct his government to end all provocative actions, especially in East Jerusalem, that make resuming negotiations with the Palestinians and achieving a two-state solution more difficult. J Street commends the United States’ opposition to new Israeli construction in East Jerusalem, as White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs reiterated in today’s statement on the matter. A near-term achievement of a viable two-state solution, one that places the capitals of both the future Palestinian state and State of Israel in Jerusalem, is the only way to secure Israel’s future as a Jewish, democratic homeland and the best way to ensure Jerusalem finally receives international recognition as the eternal capital of the State of Israel.
