Rabbi Sarah H. Reines is a congregational rabbi at Congregation Emanu-El of the City of New York. She previously served on the clergy teams of Central Synagogue and Temple Shaaray Tefila in New York City. Ordained by Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion, she earned a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and a master’s degree in Jewish communal service from Brandeis University, and is a past President of the Women’s Rabbinic Network.
As a rabbi and a mother, she is committed to fostering human dignity, sustaining the vitality of Jewish tradition — how it is taught, practiced, and renewed — and grappling with the ethical obligations that accompany power in Jewish and American life. Her engagement with Israel takes many forms: learning and teaching, writing and public conversation, sustained dialogue, and work that begins in close, one-on-one encounters and seeks to widen perspective. She has participated in dialogue and protective-presence efforts connected to Israel and the West Bank and brings a reflective voice deeply grounded in Jewish sources to conversations about Israel’s future as a Jewish and democratic state.
