Why This Haggadah?
This Haggadah invites us to bring the ancient story of liberation into conversation with the urgent questions facing Jews today. Throughout Jewish history, our people have faced persecution, violence and enslavement. For many in this generation, the attacks of October 7 were the most brutal our community has experienced in our lifetime.
The war that followed forced many of us to confront difficult questions about security, responsibility and the true cost of freedom.
Now, as conflict between the United States and Israel with Iran threatens to widen the crisis and deepen fear across the region and within Jewish communities worldwide, these questions feel even more urgent. Recent military strikes and escalating retaliation have raised the stakes of a broader regional war and intensified anxiety about the future.
Even as we gather this year with gratitude that the hostages have returned home, many of us still feel that we are living in Mitzrayim — the narrow places.
As long as others are suffering, our own celebratory glasses of wine can never be completely full.
What You’ll Find Inside
This Haggadah invites Seder participants to wrestle with urgent questions:

What responsibilities come with our power?
How do we confront suffering and injustice — even when it challenges us?
How can we use our freedom to help others become free?
Featuring reflections from J Street friends and clergy, this Haggadah connects the Passover story to the work of ensuring:

Israel flourishes as a secure, democratic homeland for the Jewish people
Palestinians achieve self-determination and independence in a state of their own
How to Use It
You can use the entire Haggadah or incorporate individual readings into your existing Seder.
Because the Seder itself is built around questions, we hope these reflections inspire meaningful conversation, and careful listening around your table.
