J Street is deeply concerned by the recent escalation in Gaza, in which over 200 rockets have been indiscriminately fired into Israeli communities, prompting major IDF airstrikes throughout the Strip. According to reports, at least 11 Israelis have been wounded, while three Palestinians have died and at least 18 have been wounded.
Hamas must put an immediate end to these attacks, which have terrorized the citizens of Sderot and other communities of the Israeli south. Both sides must continue to work urgently with Egypt, the Palestinian Authority and the international community to achieve a lasting ceasefire and a diplomatic solution to this cycle of violence.
After years of devastating conflict, Israel’s security establishment has made clear that there is no military solution to this crisis. Urgent steps can and must be taken to alleviate the devastating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, bring relief to its people and stabilize the region. Leaders must act to head off an even more devastating escalation — before it’s too late.
