J Street Deeply Concerned by Violence, Welcomes Reports of Ceasefire

August 22, 2011

J Street is deeply concerned about the violence of the past few days and the loss of lives in the terror attacks in southern Israel. We cautiously welcome reports that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire, marking what we hope will be an end to the spate of violence which began with the attacks near Eilat on Thursday.

Despite the reported ceasefire, we note that there have been continued rocket attacks from Gaza today. Israelis must not have to live in fear of being attacked in their homes, on buses or anywhere in their country. We absolutely condemn these terror attacks.

We are worried that the recent violence could spiral out of control. We call on all parties to exercise restraint. Recent events highlight the dire need to reach a two-state solution before the violence escalates.
