In the wake of Donald Trump’s emphatic victory, J Street expressed grave concern for the future of American freedoms and rights – and the future of Israelis and Palestinians trapped in a spiraling cycle of war and violence – under a second Trump term.
With Trump back in the Oval Office and the Senate – and it appears the House as well – back under Republican control, Americans’ healthcare, reproductive, civil and democratic rights and freedoms are at risk. Following the Trump-Vance ticket’s racist, misogynistic and at times antisemitic campaign, we know marginalized and minority communities will be on the frontlines and need to pull together now more than ever.
J Street is also extremely worried about the disastrous implications for the dire situation in Gaza, and whether Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his extremist government will take the election results as a green light for further devastation there and in the West Bank, and for intensified assaults on Israel’s democratic institutions.
“The overwhelming majority of Jewish Americans oppose the politics and policies of both Trump and Netanyahu,” J Street President Jeremy Ben-Ami wrote in a message to supporters. “That’s why I promise you, we will step forward to lead Jewish political opposition not just to what Donald Trump may try to do to our country, our democracy and our foreign policy – but to the policies of Netanyahu and the extreme right in Israel.”
J Street has plans to pivot and respond. The group will press for immediate, meaningful action from the Biden Administration. As Commander in Chief, President Biden retains immense power, and J Street will urge his administration to do all it can to secure a hostage release and ceasefire deal during his remaining term that will end the wars in Gaza and Lebanon, and pull Israel back from the brink of all-out war with Iran.
J Street is committed to partnering with allies and strengthening coalitions to fight for our freedoms, stand up for our values and keep our communities safe. We’ll strengthen ties with our pro-democracy and pro-peace allies in Israel, amplifying their voices, rejecting the anti-democratic, pro-annexation Trump-Netanyahu agenda, and proudly standing up for what’s right.
Just as importantly, J Street intends to be at the table as the pro-democracy, pro-diplomacy, pro-freedom coalition considers its political options and rallies together to win majorities in upcoming elections. “We will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off and get ready for the fight ahead for our values and our future,” Ben-Ami told supporters. “The stakes are too high for us to walk away.”
