J Street Statement on a moment of silence at the Olympics

July 20, 2012

J Street joins those around the world calling for a moment of silence at the London Olympics in memory of the 11 Israeli team members murdered at the 1972 Olympics.

Commemorating the tragic events of the Munich Olympics is not a political act. It is a show of support and solidarity with the families and loved ones of the the eleven vibrant Israelis who came to Munich in the spirit of peace and sportsmanship only to have their lives brutally taken from them in an act of hatred.

What happened in Munich 40 years ago should never happen to anyone again — regardless of religion, race or nationality. This is a principle the Olympic committee should be able to stand behind.
