Join us for the J Street Georgia Annual Event honoring Beth Sugarman and celebrating her remarkable contributions to our community. Just one week after the US elections, let’s come together to find hope for a better future. The evening will feature an enlightening conversation uniting diverse perspectives, with Dr. Dahlia Scheindlin, a policy expert in Israel, and Dr. Khalil Shikaki, renowned for his work in Palestinian polling and policy. Dr. Dahlia Scheindlin is a public opinion researcher and a political advisor who has worked on eight national campaigns in Israel and in 15 other countries. She is currently a policy fellow at The Century Foundation, and co-host of The Tel Aviv Review podcast, in addition to co-hosting the Election Overdose podcast at Haaretz.
Khalil Shikaki is a professor of political science, director of the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) in Ramallah, and member of the steering committee of the Arab Barometer. He is also a senior fellow at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis University. He finished his Ph.D. from Columbia University in 1985, and taught at several Palestinian and American universities including al-Najah University, Birzeit University, the University of Wisconsin (Milwaukee), the University of South Florida (Tampa), the University of Utah, and the University of Michigan.
His most recent publications include Arabs and Israelis: Conflict and Peacemaking in the Middle East, (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022, second edition) with Abdel Monem Said Aly and Shai Feldman; “On ‘Shrinking the Conflict,’ Abbas’ UN Speech, and the PA’s Ability to Adjust to the Status Quo” Critical Policy Briefs, PSR, Ramallah, Oct 2021; “Can Hamas, and does it Want to, ‘Lead’ the Palestinian People?,” Critical Policy Briefs, PSR, Ramallah, August 2021; “The Power Struggle Between Fatah and Hamas Prevents Palestinian Reconciliation and Reunification,” Critical Policy Brief, PSR, Ramallah, July 2019; “Trump’s Peace Plan: Engagement or Swift Rejection?” Co-author with Shai Feldman, Middle East Brief 126, April 2019, the Crown Center for Middle East Studies, Brandeis University.
A native of Atlanta, Beth Sugarman graduated from the Westminster Schools, attended Newcomb College of Tulane University, and received a bachelor’s degree from Emory University.
After marrying Edward, Beth became actively involved with the National Council of Jewish Women, Atlanta Section, where she held numerous positions before becoming President. She later served on the National Board of NCJW and the Atlanta Jewish Federation, and was a founding board member of the Breman Jewish Heritage Museum. Beth played a key role in developing the Louis Kahn Group Home for the Elderly, serving as a founding and longtime board member. She was pivotal in the creation and development of Genesis Shelter for Homeless Newborns and Their Families, where she also served as a founding and longtime board member. Beth was a member of the class of 1984 of Leadership Atlanta and has served in many different volunteer roles at Temple Sinai throughout the years. Additionally, she has served on the Board of Oakland Cemetery and remains a member of its Advisory Board, as well as on the Advisory Board of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra.
Beth has been an active member of J Street since its early days. She currently serves on the J Street Georgia Steering Committee as well as the National Finance Committee. She strongly supports the organization’s mission as a home for pro-Israel pro-peace Americans advocating for a negotiated resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. She is proud to be a part of J Street’s efforts to promote U.S. policies that uphold our values to secure Israel as a democratic homeland for the Jewish people.
Beth and Edward are proud parents of three and grandparents of six.
Emily Kaiman focuses on deepening Jewish engagement and community both nationally and in her home state of Georgia. Holding a BA in Judaic Studies and a Master’s in Experiential Jewish Education Emily has served in diverse Jewish communal roles including as the KOACH West Region Field Worker, the Director of Jewish Life at the Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School of Saint Louis, and the Retreat Center Program Manager at Ramah Darom. In her role at J Street, Emily leads learning initiatives for clergy and seminary students, cultivates strategic partnerships, and expands the breadth and depth of J Street’s Rabbinic and Cantorial Cabinet. Emily also works to expand the growth impact of J Street in Georgia through her work with the J Street Georgia chapter. Emily resides in Atlanta with her husband, Rabbi Ari Kaiman, their four children, Ellie, Amalia, Maayan, and Shai, and their rescue dog, Benny.
