Trump’s Cruel New Sanctions on Iran Are Morally Reprehensible and Strategically Harmful

October 8, 2020

The Trump administration’s decision to impose new sanctions that will sweep in Iranian banks facilitating trade in medical supplies and other humanitarian goods is morally reprehensible and harms both ordinary Iranians and US security interests.

This is the latest misstep in the president’s belligerent anti-diplomacy campaign that has resulted in Iran being closer to a nuclear weapon, left Iranian hardliners more empowered and placed US troops and allies in the region under greater threat.

With moves like this and its failed maneuvers at the United Nations, the administration is now trying to tie the hands of a possible Biden administration to prevent the next president from restoring and building on the Iran nuclear deal. It wishes to prevent the next president from engaging in the type of effective diplomacy that is needed to keep America and our partners safe.

Donald Trump has demonstrated time and again in myriad ways that he doesn’t care about the safety and well-being of the American people or our military – nor about the people in the Middle East who have to endure the terrible consequences of his actions. This latest act of bad faith further highlights what is at stake on election day.
